Even the smallest donations can make a difference, for example:

R20 (USD 2) Pays for return transport for a mother to visit her child at the children's HIV/AIDS clinic

R25 (USD 2.50) Buys a water container with tap-safe water in summer (ensuring that water-borne infections are not spread)

R200 (USD 20) There is a mother with a sick 7-month old child in the ward. The father has lost his job through sickness. There is no other family support. The mother cannot look for work because the child requires constant attention. Some traditional -menthol containing- medication has affected his nervous system. The mother qualifies for food parcels from the Red Cross for 2 months. The child qualifies for a R500+ (USD 50+) grant when he turns one. Until then, there is a R100 (USD10)/month grant which takes about 2 months to come through. There is a need for 'bridging finance' until the child care grant comes through.
