Projects > The One to One ART project
The British Charity, the One to One Children's Fund has made a major donation to Kidzpositive which has enabled the paediatric HIV/AIDS service at Groote Schuur Hospital to offer anti-retroviral treatment (HAART) to indigent children attending this public health facility.
This project has had important consequences:
  1. It establishes a model of partnership between a foreign donor, a local NPO as financial manager and a government institution as the provider of infrastructure and staffing.
  2. This is the first time, other than as part of a drug trial, that HAART has been made available to children attending a public service health care institution in our sub-region.
  3. The donation has led to opportunities for operational research in the form of an adherence study and the trial of new techniques of retroviral assay.
  4. It provides a training opportunity for nurses and doctors in the use of anti-retroviral drugs that has hitherto not been available.
  5. It has given families new hope and is changing attitudes to disclosure, voluntary counselling and testing, and hopefully to stigma.
  6. It has improved the morale of medical and nursing staff.
  7. The success of this project is likely to stimulate further donations so that HAART can be offered in other paediatric services in the sub-region.
There are now 151 children started on treatment at Groote Schuur Hospital, Victoria Hospital and Nazareth House. Funding from the One to One ART project will soon be extended to support treatment projects at Tygerberg and Red Cross Children's Hospitals'.
