Projects > The Rotary Ripple Effect
Rotary Claremont has provided generous support for Kidzpositive projects
over the last three years. Some might have thought these projects risky, but let's consider the returns to date: The Positive Beadwork Project:
Support in the form of purchases of Christmas Cards in the very first year (2002),
R30 000 donated in 2005. In the calendar year 2005, Kidzpositive purchased R22 000 worth of beads, sold R 720 000 worth of products and put R 685 000 in the hands of care givers of HIV-positive families. The project currently assists in supporting 100 families and is currently extending operations to Paarl, thanks to a donation from France. The Positive Beadwork Project will be receiving an Impumelelo Award in February 2007 "Rewarding innovations in government and public - private partnerships that reduce poverty and address key developmental issues of national concern." The Treatment Team Project:
In 2004, the International Committee of the Rotary Club of Cape Town donated R 100 000 toward the funding of flights and accommodation for 'treatment teams' visiting Cape Town's Groote Schuur Hospital, to exchange experience in the field of anti-retroviral therapy for children. This project led directly to the first PATA (Paediatric AIDS Treatment for Africa) conference in Cape Town in November 2005. Twenty-two teams from 8 countries held a conference so successful that participants insisted that a PATA organisation should be founded. The second PATA conference has just been completed in Nairobi, Kenya. Thirty-two teams from 18 countries held a second meeting, characterised by a vigorous exchange of experience and sharing of new ideas. In the course of the meeting it was calculated that these teams, together with another 19 PATA affiliates, take care of more than 30% of African children currently on anti-retroviral therapy. PATA is already planning a third conference in Kigali, Rwanda in 2007, with strengthened ties to UNICEF, the Clinton Foundation and UNAIDS.
