When the One to One Children's Fund asked for a list of Kidzpositive projects to support, back in 2001, a community-based service was top of the list. In January 2006, that dream finally materialised. Thanks to some very hard work, mainly from Dr Vaughan Stannard, a partnership consisting of Beautiful Gate, the Western Cape Government, Absolute Return for Kids (ARK), Etafeni, Rotary and Kidzpositive, established a clinic in Crossroads, in what had been the Trauma Unit at the Crossroads CHC. At the beginning of this year a new paediatric clinic opened at Crossroads.
Children from the nearby areas who were previously being seen at Red Cross, Tygerberg, Groote Schuur and other facilities are now attending the clinic there. The clinic is run by Beautiful Gates staff and a team from Groote Schuur Hospital. Thanks to commitment and energy from the G25 HIV/AIDS treatment team and the Beautiful Gate health care staff, more than 170 children are now on treatment in Crossroads. It is remarkable that such a complex partnership could deliver the goods with such smooth cooperation. It just shows what a transcendent goal can do. Thanks to rapid Rotary Club of Claremont action, a room full of chaotic junk has become a bright new site for the Positive Beadwork Project. This clinic has recently received an award for being the best anti-retroviral clinic in the Cape Town metropolitan area.
